Why does my brass jewelry change color?
Over time, brass will patina. The extent of the patina depends on your body's chemistry. What we do is coat our pieces with a light wax protective layer to slow the patina process. To keep your brass pieces looking great, we recommend that you keep your jewelry dry and keep it away from cosmetic products. Let your jewelry be the last thing you put on. Please read our full care instructions here.
How do I clean my brass jewelry?
You can clean your jewelry with a simple jewelry polishing cloth.
If you want to remove tarnish, you can use a few standard household products.
Vinegar Paste: combine 1 teaspoon of salt into a ½ cup of vinegar. Add the flour to create a paste. Rub the paste onto your jewelry and let it sit there for about 10 minutes. Rinse and dry well.
Ketchup: that's right, we said ketchup. There's so much vinegar and salt in it, that it makes a great tool for getting rid of tarnish. Simply cover your piece with ketchup and let it sit for 10 minutes. Rinse and dry well.
Salted Lemon: Slice a piece of lemon and sprinkle salt on the open side. Rub the lemon over your piece of jewelry [you could use a soft toothbrush to get into any hard-to-reach spots]. Rinse and dry well.
What's the difference between 14K gold fill and gold plated?
There's nearly 100% more gold in 14K gold filled (GF) jewelry components when compared to gold-plated (GP) jewelry components. There's a layer of gold on GF pieces that's been mechanically bonded to a base metal such as brass; the GF piece has a layer of gold that's 5 to 10 times thicker than the gold present on regular gold plated items. GF pieces are more durable and they won't tarnish quickly or chip. GF is also safe for those with metal allergies. If you want to read more, check out what Wikipedia has to say about it. Simply put, 14K GF means far higher quality compared to gold plate. Here at KMJ, we use 14K GF in our jump rings and ear wires.
